A set of about 653 patent families related to adjuvants were found by keyword searching. Analysis of this set proceeded without additional screening of the claims. Thus, this set contains not only key patents on adjuvants but also patents that may be more peripherally related to adjuvants. For the purposes of this initial patent landscape, and assessment of trends, this set of patent families is advantageous, because additional screening could introduce bias to the set. The set has a variety of claim types, which are discussed on the next page.
Some of the major findings include:
- the vast majority of patent owners (assignees) are corporations;
- assignees with 5 or more patent families own about 40% of all patent families in the set, with GlaxoKlineSmith having the largest share;
- all except two of the top assignees have corporate headquarters in high income countries, the two exceptions are in China;
- on average, patent families belonging to corporations are about twice as large as patent families belonging to non-profit organizations;
- the patent applications are overwhelmingly filed in high income countries (82% of patent applications) and less than 1% are filed in low income countries.
